Guilford County School Board at Large
 
     The many challenges facing the Guilford County Board of Education (particularly the immediate need to hire a new Superintendent) are among the many reasons for my decision to seek a seat on the Board.
 
     As a resident of Guilford County for many years, I am aware of the growth of our community.  With such expansion goes both increased and diverse challenges to the individuals who run our government in their roles as public office-holders.  I hope to have a key role in responding to those challenges; especially those which directly affect our children.
 
     Fiscal concerns which face the Board of Education, need to be thoroughly understood.  That includes funds management as well as meeting school needs and subsequent indebtedness.  My professional experiences in banking qualifies me well to share my knowledge about such matters with other Board members and the public.
 
This is consistent with my motto, "Invest in the Future - Help our Children Now."  It is my strong desire to become a member of the Guilford County Board of Education.
 


People who know me well and other citizens keenly aware of my long-time interest and concern for high quality public education have encouraged me to stand for election.

  Why I am asking for your vote in the

North Carolina Primary on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008?

 
Goals and Objectives
 
1. An orderly, controlled learning environment: We must maintain a safe and orderly environment. This is essential not only for students, but for staff as well.

2. Drop Out Rates/ Graduation Rates: We must motivate our children to want to come to school. The result would be a self fulfilled effort in the reduction of dropout rates and higher graduation rates, less retentions and overall preparation of students to compete in a global society.

3. Communication:  We must continue to improve communication between the School Board and the County Commissioners. Relationships built on trust and transparency are paramount as we engage our citizens and leaders to find solutions to meet the challenges that face our school system now and in the future.
4. Funding/Accountability; The Guilford County Schools are in need of our citizens to continue their support of our children by passing the upcoming bond to ensure good facilities and state of the art technology in a safe environment conducive for learning. However, leadership must be responsible for good stewardship of our tax payer dollars and hold those responsible for oversight accountable.

5. Academic Prowess; All of our children should be challenged to reach the height of their possibilities. We should explore the expansion of the Advanced Learners program and increase the number of students in the honors and advanced placement courses. We must increase expectations at all levels. We must engage parents along with others to provide mentoring and assurance for the success of all of our children.
 
6. Diversity; We must promote a school climate of inclusion for all our students while accepting and respecting each other's differences. As a parent, we must expect this from the administration, students, teachers and parents and staff. We must track and measure this through diversity training and community partnerships.
